What content does this copyright policy cover?
This policy covers all text, images, video, graphics, data visualisations and other original material published by Insight Britain on insightbritain.co.uk or our associated platforms. It also extends to user-submitted content, guest contributions and licensed third-party material.
We take image rights seriously. Every photograph, illustration or graphic used in our journalism is either created in-house, licensed from reputable agencies, obtained under a Creative Commons or similar open licence with attribution, or used with the copyright holder’s explicit permission. Where we inadvertently publish an image without proper clearance, we will remove it promptly once notified.
Insight Britain itself asserts copyright over all editorial content produced by its staff writers and editors, except where otherwise stated. Our articles, explainers, newsletters and other original output may not be reproduced, republished or redistributed without prior written consent, save for short excerpts permitted under fair dealing for criticism, review or news reporting.
How do I submit a takedown request?
If you are a copyright holder and believe that Insight Britain has published your work without the necessary permission, please send a written notice to our dedicated copyright address: copyright@insightbritain.co.uk. We aim to acknowledge receipt within two business days and to resolve the matter within ten business days.
Your notice should include: (1) a clear description of the copyrighted work you claim has been infringed; (2) the exact URL or location on insightbritain.co.uk where the material appears; (3) your full name, postal address and a contact telephone number or email; (4) a statement that you have a good-faith belief that the use is not authorised by the copyright owner, its agent or the law; and (5) a statement, made under penalty of perjury, that the information in the notice is accurate and that you are the copyright owner or authorised to act on the owner’s behalf. Please sign the notice physically or electronically.
We will review every takedown request in accordance with UK copyright law, specifically the Copyright, Designs and Patents Act 1988, and with the principles of fair dealing. If we remove material in response to a valid notice, we will notify the user or contributor who posted it and provide them with an opportunity to submit a counter-notice if they believe the removal was in error.
How this works in practice
Consider this concrete example. A freelance photographer discovers that a photograph they licensed exclusively to another news outlet appears in one of Insight Britain’s explainer articles. The photographer submits a takedown notice to copyright@insightbritain.co.uk with the article URL, a copy of their original licence agreement, and their signed statement. Our Standards & Fact-Checking Lead, Sofia Lindberg, verifies the claim against our image records. If the image was sourced without the correct licence, we remove it within three business days and publish a correction note at the bottom of the article. We also update our internal sourcing protocols to prevent a recurrence.
Who is responsible for handling these requests?
